This week we discuss ASIAN CINEMA. We also review the new movies FRIGHT NIGHT, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, TREE OF LIFE and SKIN. In the news Ridley Scott threatens to make a sequel to Blade Runner, a Barnum Biopic, and Will Smith might star in Fantastic Voyage. Also the movie game and much more.
Audition is currently on my Netflix Canada que, need to finish Ichi the Killer before I move on to that one. Interesting discussion overall, there are so many facets of Asian cinema that can easily make up an episode on their own. You guys hit all the big ones though. Here are some Asian films (not mentioned on the show) that I enjoy / would recommend:
ReplyDeleteDramas:
Infernal Affairs
In the Mood for Love
Chungking Express
Farewell My Concubine
The Good Lawyers Wife (saw this at TIFF a few years back and loved it)
The Wedding Banquet
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives
Comedy:
Save the Green Planet
Action:
13 Assassins
Ashes of Time
Battle Royale
Breaking News (flawed but great opening tracking shot) – pretty much any Johnnie To film is worth seeing
Time and Tide
Zatoichi
Also, the Takeshi Miike’s last name is pronounced Me-Kay (hope that helps)
p.s. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and Oldboy are far better than Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. Thought Mr. Vengeance was the weakest film in the trilogy.
That's a good list of films.
ReplyDeleteYeah, we couldn't possible cover 'em all. Maybe we'll go back to this subject one day.
Any suggestions for show topics?
Dwayne
How about doing a show on some of the Latin/South American directors who have made, or are starting to make, a name for themselves in Hollywood?
ReplyDeleteExamples could be: Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, Robert Rodriguez, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Alejandro Amenábar and Fernando Meirelles.
